As a recruiter, it’s your job to ensure that the hiring process runs smoothly and efficiently. One of the most frustrating and time-consuming issues you can encounter is a candidate dropping out of an interview at the last minute. Here are five dos and don’ts to help you avoid this scenario:
- Do clearly communicate the interview details: Make sure that the candidate has all of the necessary information about the time, location, and format of the interview. It’s also a good idea to provide a point of contact in case there are any last-minute changes or issues.
- Don’t schedule the interview too far in advance: While it’s important to give candidates enough notice, scheduling an interview too far in advance can increase the risk of something coming up that prevents them from attending. Try to schedule interviews within a week or two of the initial conversation.
- Do follow up with the candidate: A quick email or phone call a day or two before the interview can serve as a reminder and also give the candidate an opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns.
- Don’t leave the candidate hanging: If a candidate does need to cancel or reschedule the interview, make sure to follow up and offer alternative dates and times as soon as possible. This shows the candidate that you value their time and are willing to accommodate their schedule.
- Do consider offering options for remote interviews: With the increasing prevalence of remote work, offering the option for a virtual interview can be a good way to ensure that the candidate is able to participate, even if they are unable to physically be in the same location as the interviewer.
